During my annual vacation, I've been visiting the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, especially the Bastei Bridge, for a long time, and my buddy Rene from GOD OF GAMES HOF was there with me. We reached our destination around 7 p.m. I really wanted a photo in the early morning hours and preferably in the fog. In the evening we explored the area to find a nice spot for the pictures in the morning. The decision was made pretty quickly.

We spent the night in the car and I didn't get a second of sleep. 3:45 a.m. we drank coffee and got ready. I had hoped for rain during the night to see the desired fog, but it didn't rain. Fortunately, after we reached the first viewing platform, the fog was perfect and the Lilienstein was sticking out of it and in the foreground the Bastei Bridge was clear. We continued to the platform which we had chosen in the evening. Somehow several photographers had the same idea and so it got pretty crowded at the spot and that at 4:30 in the morning.

All in all, it was a very nice trip and I can only recommend everyone to visit this beautiful mountain range, preferably out of season, as the Elbe Sandstone Mountains are very crowded during the season.

It was first built in 1824 as a simple wooden construction to allow access to the Bastei, a striking rock massif in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Over time, the bridge has been expanded and strengthened several times to accommodate the increasing number of visitors. It was eventually replaced by a stone bridge in the 1850s, funded by Queen Maria Carolina of Saxony. This impressive construction was made of sandstone cliffs that were joined together to ensure a stable and safe crossing.

During the Second World War, however, the Bastei Bridge was destroyed by an explosion. However, it was carefully restored after the war and is now a popular tourist destination and landmark of the region.

The blue hour is a fascinating time window for photography, occurring just before sunrise or just after sunset. During this short period between day and night, the natural light bathes the surroundings in an intense, cool blue that creates a unique atmosphere. Photographing in the blue hour opens up a wide range of possibilities for taking atmospheric and aesthetically pleasing shots.

An important aspect of taking photos in the twilight hour is proper planning. Since this phase only lasts for a short time, it is important to know the exact time of sunrise or sunset. It's a good idea to be there early and have your camera equipment ready so you don't lose valuable time.

The blue hour offers a variety of motifs that present themselves particularly well in this special light. Architectural structures such as cities, bridges or churches can radiate a magical atmosphere in the blue hour. The cool blue of the sky often harmonises wonderfully with warm artificial light sources, which create a beautiful contrast effect.

The blue hour is also great for landscape photography. The soft blue tones in the sky and the slowly fading brightness create a calm and romantic atmosphere. Bodies of water such as lakes, rivers or the sea can appear particularly picturesque in this light. Another popular motif is the atmospheric silhouette of trees or mountains against the blue sky.

When shooting in the blue hour, it is important to choose the right camera settings. A low ISO setting ensures good image quality and minimizes image noise. A tripod is often essential to avoid camera shake with longer exposure times. Experimenting with different exposure times and apertures makes it possible to capture the desired atmosphere and achieve lighting effects such as star points or light stripes.
